World War IIDS Bennestvet
DS Bennestvet was on a journey from New Orleans to Cristóbal carrying war material. On the 15th of June 1942, the the ship was torpedoed by the German uboat U-172 not too far from Cristóbal. The ship broke in half and sunk within a minute. 13 men escaped from the undertow and managed to get on to two rafts that had resurfaced. After almost two days of drifting around in the sea, the crew were observed by an allied airplane and saved by a Patrol ship, which brought them to Cristóbal. Twelve people perished in the sinking.
