World War IIDS Corvus
SS Corvus was on a journey in convoy from Gaston to Plymouth with 1800 tons of Coal. On the 27th February 1945, the vessel was torpedoed by the German U-boat U-1018 just seven nautical miles away from Lizard Point. The torpedo tore up the entire portside, so that the ship sank with a massive heel in a few minutes. Some crew members managed to set loose a life boat, but most of them had to jump overboard. Eight men were killed instantly or drowned afterwards. The survivors were brought to Falmouth by an Irish vessel and a Swedish ship. The escort ship later retaliated, and U-1018 was destroyed.
