World War IIMS. Fernhill

MS Fernhill was on an independent journey from Liverpool to Buenos Aires with general cargo, and a shipment of explosives. Just outside of Bathurst, Gambia, was the convoy disbanded, and DS Fernhill headed west by itself. On the 6th of August 1943, the ship almost collided with a submarine. MS Fernhill opened fire towards the submarine, but no hits could be affirmed. The submarine submerged, and after a three-hour long hunt was DS. Fernhill hit in the machine room by torpedoes. The three machinists died immediately.  It was on the 6th of August 1943, that the torpedoes hit. The torpedoes were fired by a German U757 submarine in position 0707, 1948W. The submarine emerged from the water and took 3rd machinist Nils Bremer Johannsen captive before it disappeared. Two days later was Fernhills crew rescued by an American merchant ship and brought to Freetown.
