World War IIDS Fingal

SS Fingal was on a journey from Sydney to Port Darwin carrying general cargo and ammunition and was escorted by an American destroyer. On the 5th of May 1943, the vessel was torpedoed by the Japanese I-180 U-boat in the position 3035S, 15329E. The deck was blown up and seven men lost their lives in the explosion. Several of the crew were blown overboard and Fingal sunk within a minute. The float buoys emerged and helped the survivors to stay afloat until a destroyer would come and help them. 12 men perished in the sinking.
