World War IDS Gurre
DS Gurre was torpedoed by the German U-boat U-66 on March 1, 1917, near Shetland. The ship was en route from Halden to Lerwick via Bergen, carrying a cargo of steel blocks. Twenty crew members lost their lives, along with two British passengers, Elinor Alice Maud Everall (born 1863) and her daughter Gladys Helen Everall (born 1899). There were four survivors from the crew who were rescued by the submarine, but the cook died shortly after due to injuries and was buried at sea. (Sources: Sjøhistorie.no and Norsk Maritimt Museum)
