DS Profit var på reise i ballast fra Southend til Hull. Skipet ble 17. april 1941 minesprengt utenfor Southend. Under eksplosjonen ble øvre bru og babord båtdekk sprengt bort. Seks mann fikk låret en livbåt. De havnet i sjøen da båten hang seg opp. Profit sank etter to minutter. En britisk jager kom straks til og fisket opp fem mann fra sjøen. Tre av de reddede måtte på sykehus. 12 mann omkom i forliset hvorav åtte nordmenn, tre svensker og en brite.
SS Profit was on a journey in ballast from Southend to Hull. On the 17th of April 1941, the ship hit a mine outside of Southend. During the explosion the bridge and the portside deck was blown away. Six men managed to lower down a lifeboat, they ended up in the sea when the boat got stuck. Profit sank after two minutes. A Royal Navy Destroyer came to the rescue and brought up five men from the water. Three of the survivors had to be brought to a hospital. 12 men perished in the sinking, of the dead there were eight Norwegians, three Swedes and a Briton.
