World War IIDS Ruth I

SS Ruth I was on a journey in an east going convoy for the Great Britain loaded with steel, wood and pulp. On the 6th of April 1944, was the vessel torpedoed by the German uboat U-302 in position 4504N, 3520W. Ruth I broke in half. Three men passed away in the machine room which was quickly filled with water. A self-made raft managed to have enough room for the rest of the crew. 19 men managed to get away from the ship side as the lashings of the cargo on the deck broke. The ship sank om 20 minutes after the torpedo attack. 36 survivors were rescued by an escort vessel.
