World War IIDS Samnanger

SS Samnanger was on a journey from Halifax to Sierra Leone in ballast. Samnanger left the convoy and no one had heard from it ever since the departing. According to German sources, the ship was sunk by the German U-boat U-99. First the the ship was hit by a torpedo and then fired upon until it burst into flames in position 54N, 18W.  Due to the ship not sinking at first, the U-boat decided to sink the ship with gunfire. More than 50 artillery shells tore through the ship and it burst into flames. The ship turned into a flaming wreck with the help from a strong gust of wind and startled waves. The U-boat found no survivors. The entire crew of 30 men perished in the sinking; 25 Norwegians, two Britons, two Spaniards and a Swede.
