World War IDS Selma
DS Selma was struck by a mine on October 25, 1915, by a mine laid by the German U-boat UC-3 off North Foreland. The ship was en route from Middlesbrough to Nantes carrying iron. Eighteen crew members and the steward’s wife, who served as a cook, lost their life in the shipwreck as the ship went down rapidly. Brothers Alf and Otto Storløs also lost their lifes in the same incident. The chief engineer and an able seaman managed to save themselves in a lifeboat and were later rescued by a French vessel.
