World War IIDS Taborfjell

SS Taborfjell departed from New York with destination for Montreal carrying 16200 sacks of raw sugar from Matanzas, Cuba. The ship was torpedoed by the German uboat U-576 on the 30th of April 1942, 95 nautical miles from Cape Cod. The detonations blew up almost the entire ship and it sank within minutes. The watchman on deck dived into the ocean, while the off-duty workers and the machinists had no chance of survival. 17 men lost their lives as Taborfjell went down Three men drifted on a raft for 20 hours until they were rescued. These three men arrived at St. John’s on the 7th of May with a submarine from Royal Navy.
