World War IIMS Tyr

MV Tyr sailed in a westbound storm while being pelted from hail and heavy rain without cargo for Halifax. In this storm, MV Tyr lost its course and the contact with the convoy it was traveling with. At the 9th of March in 1942 the ship was torpedoed by the German uboat U-96 at the coordinates 4340N and 6110W. The ship was flooded and the ship sank in about nine minutes. The whole crew managed to get into the lifeboats, shortly afterwards the U-boat surfaced and hailed the lifeboats over. The captain of the U-boat apologized for sinking the ship, explaining that it was simply his duty to do it. The captain then proceeded to give the lifeboats the coordinates to be able to sail to Sable Island. Due to harsh winds and high seas the three lifeboats were split apart. After 16 hours, the first lifeboat was rescued by a Canadian patrol vessel. The 11th of March 1942 was the second boat spotted by a allied plane and was then rescued by a Canadian destroyer. The third life boat with 13 passengers were never found.
