World War IIMT Grena

MT Grena was on a journey alone in ballast from Aden to Abadan. On the 21st of March 1944, the ship was torpedoed by the Japanese U-boat I-26 in position 2048N, 5938E. The ship broke in half and only the prow floated on before it capsized and sank. The entire crew had to jump overboard as the portside was destroyed, and the lifeboats at the starboard couldn’t be lowered down because of the heel of the ship. The motorboat eventually slid down into the water and some men boarded it and started to get people out of the water. After a while, one of the other lifeboats was found, and it was flipped over and quickly emptied of water. Following a headcount, it was discovered that there were three men missing and seven were critically wounded. The survivors met a dhow which led them to the British airplane station by Ras el Hadj. But before the arrived, one of the wounded died. Later, yet another three of the wounded perished. In total, three Norwegians, two Britons, one Australian and one Canadian perished in the sinking.
