MT Mexico var på reise fra Curacao til London med 3800 tonn brenselolje. Den 6. mars 1941, nær innløpet til Themsen, sprang en akustisk mine under maskinrommet med ødeleggende virkning. Mexico ble løftet opp, motoren ble stoppet momentant, og splintdeler og skipsdeler fløy til værs før en røyksky innhyllet akterskipet, som kort etter lå under vann. Mexico sank i løpet av fem minutter. Akterut ble fire nordmenn, en belgier, en brite, en hollender, en finne og to latviere drept. 21 reddede ble brakt i land i Sheerness.

MT Mexico was on a journey from Curacao to London with 3800 fuel oil. At 6th of March 1941, close to the inlet of the river Thames, a acoustic mine went off under the engine room with devastating effect. MT Mexico was lifted from the water by the explosion, and the engines stopped, debris and parts of the ship flew to the skies before a cloud of smoke engulfed the afterbody of the ship, which quickly afterwards was submerged in water. 5 minutes after they hit the mine the ship was completely submerged. Four Norwegians, one Belgian, one Briton, a Dutchman, a Fin and two Latvians perished in the sinking. 21 survivors was brought to the shore in Sheerness.
