World War IIMT Nina Borthen

MT Nina Borthen departed from MIlford Haven at the 30th of September 1940 in ballast headed for the Persian Gulf in Africa. The tanker disappeared without a trace, but a lifeboat drifted ashore at Dunmore in Ireland at the 19th of December 1940. At the 6th of October 1940 the German U-boat, U-103, reported that it had sunk a tanker in the position 53N, 25W, which could be correlated with the expected position from MT Nina Borthen. The Captain of the German U-boat could not identify the vessel closer. Neither had the captain found any lifeboats or rafts with passengers that they could ask the usual questions. The entire crew of 28 Norwegians and seven Britons perished in the sinking.
