World War IIMT Storsten

MT Storsten was one of the Kvarstad ships that were interned in Sweden in Gothenburg. On March 31, 1942, Storsten broke out along with 10 other Norwegian ships, heading for the United Kingdom. On April 1, a British radio station intercepted an SOS from the tanker, with the word “torpedoed.” After a German attack on the ship off Kristiansand, the crew decided to scuttle the vessel. Forty-nine men boarded three lifeboats. One lifeboat with 17 men disappeared and drifted ashore near the Tyborøn Canal on the western coast of Jutland. The other two lifeboats reached Jøssingfjord on April 4. Six men managed to make their way back to Sweden, while 23 ended up in German captivity.
