World War IDS Solbakken

DS Solbakken was sunk by the German U-boat UC-24 on February 4, 1917. The ship was en route from Buenos Aires to Cherbourg carrying a cargo of wheat. The U-boat towed the two lifeboats towards France, but one of the lifeboats drifted away and was never found again. The remaining lifeboat reached Gijon after four days. Prior to the sinking, there had been a poor inspection of the lifeboat equipment, resulting in limited food and water supplies in the lifeboats. Fifteen people lost their lives in the shipwreck.
