World War IDS Heimland I
DS Heimland I was struck by a mine on January 28, 1917, by a mine laid by the German U-boat UC-26, approximately two nautical miles from Inner Dowsing Lightship. The ship was en route from Tyne Dock to St. Nazaire, carrying a cargo of coal. Ten people lost their lives in the shipwreck, and three people were later rescued by a British merchant vessel.
