World War IIMT Kars
MT Kars was torpedoed on February 22, 1942, by the German U-boat U-96 off Newfoundland. The vessel was en route from Halifax to Belfast. A fire broke out because of the torpedoing, and the ship broke in two. The forward section sank, while the aft section was towed to Halifax and beached. Forty-six people lost their lives in the sinking, including one Norwegian. One person was rescued from the sinking.
