World War IISS David H. Atwater

The American SS David H. Atwater was sunk by shellfire on 3 April 1942 by the German U-boat U-552 off the eastern coast of the United States. The vessel was en route from Lamberts Point, Virginia, to Fall River, Massachusetts, carrying coal. Twenty-four lives were lost, and three persons were rescued.
