World War IIDS Kommandøren
The DS Kommandøren was used for Norwegian troop transport in Sognefjorden following the outbreak of war on 9 April 1940. While docked at Leikanger, the vessel was attacked by German bombers, fatally wounding the ship’s captain, Thorvald Kornelius Johannessen. After the Norwegian campaign, the ship was repaired and returned to service. On 29 March 1945, Kommandøren was sunk in Bergen harbour by a torpedo from the German E-boat S-13. The torpedo was accidentally fired by a German crewman, causing the Norwegian vessel to sink and resulting in the death of sailor Alf H. Larsen. The wreck of Kommandøren was salvaged after the war and subsequently condemned.
