World War IIDS Sydfold
The DS Sydfold was torpedoed on 22 January 1940 by the German U-boat U-61 off the coast of Scotland. A fire broke out in the aft section of the vessel, where four men were presumed to have been killed instantly. The ship was en route from Kristiansand to Newcastle. The survivors were rescued by the Haugesund-registered vessel Rona, where they reported having seen lights from a U-boat. Of the 24 crew members, five lost their lives.
