World War IIMS Ronda
The MS Ronda was the first Norwegian vessel lost during World War II, sinking on Wednesday, 13 September 1939. While en route from Antwerp to Kristiansand, the ship was blown up by a mine off Terschelling, the Netherlands. The vessel sank within two minutes, making it impossible to launch the lifeboats.
Those who could managed to climb into a workboat (travaljebåt) that had floated free. Normally designed for only 10 people, the boat took on an additional 10 survivors from the water. The 20 survivors endured 58 hours in rain and rough seas before being rescued by an Italian ship and brought to Vlissingen.
Ronda had 39 people on board, including seven passengers. Sixteen crew members and two passengers lost their lives in the sinking.
