World War IIDS Lom

SS Lom was docked in Bari, Italy, a forward allied supply base, with supplies for the allied forces. On the 2nd of December 1943, Lom was amongst the many ships that was targeted by a heavy German airstrike. Lom was instantly wrecked. The reason why Lom got shipwrecked was that the German aircraft had struck an ammunition ship. This ship blew up beside many closely anchored ships in the harbor. A ship with poisonous gas also leaked and the gas spread out. Boats and rafts from more than 17 ships fought to shore through flames and dangerous air. Two men from Lom died on board and on the 16th of December 1943, a third died in a hospital.
