World War IIDS Christian Michelsen

SS Christian Michelsen was on a journey from New York to Bizerte with ammunition and war materials to the allied forces in North Africa. The vessel was torpedoed on the 26th of September 1943 by the German uboat U-410 80 nautical miles west of Bizerte. The ship was blown to pieces and disappeared into the ocean in under a minute. Three men in the aft managed to jump overboard were saved by an escort vessel and later brought to a hospital in Bizerte. 47 men perished in the sinking.
