World War IIDS Kongshaug
The DS Kongshaug was part of a convoy along the coast of the United Kingdom, carrying coal. On 9 July 1942, the vessel was in Lyme Bay, between Dartmouth and Portland, when it was attacked by fast German E-boats. Kongshaug was sunk by a torpedo that struck just in front of the bridge, and the ship went down in seconds. The crew attempted to board the lifeboats but had to jump over the side in haste. Six Norwegians and two British crew members went down with Kongshaug. Fourteen men were rescued from the sea by a British destroyer.
