World War IIDS Douro
SS Douro was on a journey from Reykjavik to Hull with 375 tons of frozen fish. The vessel was attacked by a German aircraft in position 6041N, 1258W at the 9th of May 1942. The German bomber was shot down by Gunner Peder Kristiansen from Buenesfjord in Reine. Duoro was hit by four bombs and broke in half and quickly sank. Four men was killed in the galley and three men in the engine room. The rest of the crew managed to dive into the sea, but three of these drowned. 10 survivors got to board a raft which was later observed by a plane from RAF and was later brought to Reykjavik by an Icelandic trawler. The wounded were treated on the Norwegian hospital on Iceland.
