World War IIMS Pleasantville

The MS Pleasantville was en route from New York to the Middle East with phosphate and war materials when it sailed alone from Chesapeake Bay. The ship was torpedoed on 7 June 1942 by the German U-boat U-135 at position 34°12’N and 68°00’W. The engine was stopped, and the crew abandoned ship into three lifeboats. Shortly thereafter, the U-boat surfaced between the lifeboats and fired another torpedo, causing the ship to sink. The following day, two of the lifeboats were found by a Polish ship and taken to Trinidad. The last boat was found on 9 June, and the survivors were landed at Port of Spain. Two men perished in the sinking.
