World War IIMS Sørland
The MS Sørland was the first vessel in the Norwegian fleet to be sunk. It was shelled and set on fire by German warships on 9 April 1940 and sank near Skiphelle in Drøbaksundet, where it became involved in combat on the first day of the war. The ship was carrying paper, wood wool, and general cargo from Moss. The crew managed to run the ship aground a couple of cable lengths from the cliff wall. Sørland had a crew of five men, with two killed in their cabins. The three remaining crew members escaped to land by swimming through ice floes.
