World War IIMT Sydhav

MT Sydhav was on a journey from Trinidad to Freetown, carrying 11140 ton of oil. On the 6th of March 1942, it was torpedoed by the German uboat U-505 in the position 0553N, 1430W and sunk within three minutes. All the men on board had to jump overboard to the waters, but were pulled down by the undertow. 12 of the men didn’t make it up to the surface. 24 of the survivors boarded a lifeboat which had surfaced. For several hours, they rowed the lifeboat in hopes of finding any other surviving crew-members. MT Sydhav was torpedoed after breakfast and by midnight the crew were saved by a British escortship and brought to Freetown. 12 people perished in the sinking.
