World War IIMS Sama
MS Sama was en route in a westbound convoy, carrying 1,000 tons of porcelain clay to St. Johns, N.B. The convoy was attacked by five U-boats, and Sama was torpedoed on February 22, 1942, by the German U-boat U-155 at position 49°30’N and 38°30’W. The vessel sank within two to three minutes. In the dark winter night, 24 men clung to rafts and debris. Twenty men were rescued by an escort ship. Three men were lost, and one perished when he was crushed between the raft and the side of a destroyer that had arrived. Nineteen men died in the sinking, 15 of them likely when the torpedo struck the ship.
