World War IIDS Victo

The DS Victo was en route in convoy from London to Tyne in ballast when, on 8 November 1941, it was attacked by German aircraft off Flamborough Head. The ship was hit by three bombs. The wheelhouse and upper bridge collapsed, the engine stopped, the lights went out, and steam and smoke poured from the engine and boiler rooms. The crew was ordered into the lifeboats, but a headcount revealed that five men were missing. The captain and two men boarded the ship again and found three men. Two men are believed to have been killed instantly in the boiler room.
