World War IIDS Ila

SS Ila was on a journey in convoy from Bostom to Glasgow, loaded with 2070 tons of steel and general cargo. The convoy was attacked by German U-boats in the position 5330N, 3000W. On the 15th of October 1941, Ila was struck by two torpedoes. The midship broke and sank immediately. When the waters engulfed the midships some of the crew were washed overboard and into the sea. Others jumped into the sea. Six men kept themselves afloat on wreckage and four men clung to a tipped over motorboat’s keel. One of them died shortly after from frostbite and exhaustion and slipped off the bottom of the boat. By dawn, an escort ship appeared and took in nine survivors. Within six hours, two of them died. 14 Norwegians and one Briton perished in the sinking.
