World War IIDS Augvald
DS Augvald was on a journey in a convoy from Halifax to Great Britain, loaded with 7.000 ton of steel and tractors. The convoy met extreme weather and was disbanded and delayed by many days. A ship shipwrecked in open sea, another stranded on Iceland and two was torpedoed. Information regarding two other ships were missing, one of them was the Norwegian ship, Augvald. On the 14th of March 1941, a man from Augvald was found by a Royal Navy Corvette. The survivor informed that Augvald had been torpedoed by a German U-boat (U-147) on the 2nd of March 1941, in the position 5930N, 0730W. Augvald immediately sunk within two minutes. He found a raft, but heard cries of help, but was unable to help. A jig carrying three passengers drifted helplessly through a storm and disappeared. After 11 days on the raft he was saved. 27 Norwegian and two English deckhands perished in the sinking.
