World War IIMS Talleyrand
The Norwegian MS Talleyrand was en route from Fremantle to Cape Town with a cargo of steel bars, wheat, and wool when, on 2 August 1940, the vessel was captured by the German commerce raider HSK Atlantis in position 30°30’S 67°00’E. The ship was subsequently shelled and sunk. The crew was transferred to Atlantis and later to the Norwegian vessel Tirranna, which had also been captured on 10 July 1940. Tirranna was sent toward France, sailing through the Indian Ocean, around Africa, and into the Bay of Biscay. On 22 September 1940, Tirranna was torpedoed by the British U-boat Tuna off the mouth of the Gironde. Three men from Talleyrand were lost in the sinking.
