World War IIDS Salonica
SS Salonica was on a journey in convoy from Sydney N.S. to Newcastle carrying 1030 fathoms of pit props. On the 23rd of November 1940, the ship was torpedoed by the German uboat U-100 in position 5516N, 1214W in the middle of a storm and high seas. The torpedo struck the boiler room which killed two men. The lifeboat on the portside were blown away, the lifeboat on the starboard capsized and was filled with water once it reached the sea. 16 men was in the sea, whereas 14 of them disappeared in the rough seas. Seven of them were later found and rescued. Nine surviving crew members still on board Salonica managed to get to the dinghy and after 45 minutes of rowing, they were saved. Nine men perished in the sinking.
