World War IIMS Brandanger
The Norwegian MS Brandanger was sailing in convoy from San Pedro to Liverpool with 8,000 tons of general cargo when the vessel was torpedoed on 11 October 1940 by the German U-boat U-48 in position 57°02’N 17°42’W. The explosion tore away the entire port side of the midship section, destroying the lifeboats on that side. On the starboard side, the motorboat was smashed against the ship’s hull, and the five men in it were lost. Sixteen men were rescued the following morning. The second lifeboat was found on 16 October, and the survivors were brought ashore in Liverpool three days later. Six men were lost in the sinking.
