World War IIMS Touraine

The Norwegian MS Touraine was sailing in convoy from the Clyde to Sydney in ballast when the vessel lost contact with the convoy during the night of 7 October 1940. Later that same day, the ship was torpedoed by the German U-boat U-59 in position 55°12’N 10°18’W, west of Bloody Foreland. No one was killed in the torpedoing. One of the lifeboats was picked up the following evening, while the other two reached Arranmore and Tory Island under their own power on 10 October. The ship’s cook died in hospital from injuries sustained during the sinking.
