World War IIDS Simla

The Norwegian DS Simla was sailing in convoy from Philadelphia to Methil with a cargo of 8,000 tons of steel bars and scrap iron when the vessel was torpedoed on 22 September 1940 by the German U-boat U-100 in position 55°08’N 17°40’W. The crew was aware that the worst could happen, as several ships in the convoy had already been sunk. Simla was unable to stop her engines, and the vessel was therefore driven rapidly to the bottom, sinking within half a minute. The crew jumped overboard and, bruised and battered, managed to fight their way through the whirlpools and onto rafts and flooded lifeboats that had floated free. The survivors were rescued after 45 minutes. Four Norwegians and one Dane were lost in the sinking.
