MT Italia was in a convoy loaded with 13000 ton gasoline desetined for Manchester. On the 15th of June 1940, the vessel was attacked by a German U-boat U-38 in the position 5037N, 0844W in the St. George’s Channel. The torpedo struck the engine room where doors and the bulkhead blew up and the hallways and cabins were filled with gas and smoke. The ship went ablaze and the flames spread across the deck and the waters. Many jumped overboard, lifebelts were handed out and the lifeboats were hastily deployed. A rescue party were sent to look for any survivor and nine men were saved. They were transported to Plymouth. 19 men perished in the sinking.
