World War IIDS Komet
The Norwegian DS Komet departed Caen on 17 June 1940 bound for Grangemouth as part of the evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force from France (“Operation Dynamo”). Komet was sunk by German aircraft just off the French coast. The master, Adler Røstad, was killed. Chief engineer Harald Pedersen was mortally wounded and died on 20 June 1940 in a hospital in Bayeux, where he was buried alongside Røstad. A French patrol vessel brought the remaining crew to Cherbourg, from where they took a ferry and arrived in Southampton the same day.
