World War IIDS Tosca
The Norwegian DS Tosca was en route from South America to Norway when the vessel was torpedoed on 10 April 1940 by the German U-boat U-37 in position 07°34’W, approximately 50 nautical miles northwest of the Faroe Islands. Shortly before being torpedoed, those on board Tosca had observed smoke rising from a Swedish tanker that had been hit. As Tosca moved to assist, the ship itself was struck. Ordinary seaman Halvard Bakken, 18, from Tysvær, and cook Hjalmar Nygaard, 28, from Avaldsnes, were killed. They are registered as the first casualties in the Nortraship fleet. The 29 survivors were brought ashore in Kirkwall.
