World War IIDS Meteor
The Norwegian DS Meteor had been requisitioned by the Germans and converted into a hospital ship, renamed Rostock and flying the German flag. Operating in the Baltic Sea, the vessel bore Red Cross markings and flags and was later renamed Meteor II by the Germans. However, toward the end of the war, the Germans violated international regulations by transporting armed troops aboard the hospital ship. On 9 March 1945, the vessel was docked in Pillau when the city was attacked by Soviet aircraft. Bombs struck the ship, causing it to sink alongside the quay. Meteor had a Norwegian crew, of which three men were killed in the bombing. The wreck was later demolished.
