World War IIDS Landego
The Norwegian cable-laying vessel DS Landego had been requisitioned by the Germans to lay communication cable across Toppsundet in Kasfjorden. It later became clear that the Germans had ordered the cable to be laid in waters that also contained a minefield. As a result, on 11 July 1942, Landego struck a mine and sank. No one on board had considered it possible that operations would be conducted in a mined area, as the German harbour office in Harstad had previously assured that everything was in order. Landego had a crew of 14; seven of them, along with two Germans, were lost in the sinking.
