World War IIDS Nordland
The Norwegian DS Nordland operated on the express cargo route between Trondheim and Hammerfest. Known as a proud vessel and a long-serving workhorse on this coastal stretch, Nordland was crossing the Saltenfjord on 19 October 1942 with a cargo consisting mainly of train oil and fish meal. The ship struck a submarine mine laid by the French submarine Rubis between Mårnesskagen Light and Hernesskagen.
Suddenly, it was as if a hand from the sea lifted the ship violently upward, breaking it in two as the explosion hurled the shattered sections apart. Nordland sank within seconds. Seventeen men were lost in the sinking; five were rescued by smaller vessels in the area.
