World War IIDS K.G. Meldahl

SS K. G. Meldahl was on its way northbound, 160 nautical miles south east from East London in South Africa. The crew spotted a uboat and they went full speed ahead. The ship tried to flee away from the submarines position in a zigzag pattern while sending a distress signal, but the submarine caught up with them. On the 10th of November 1942, K. G. Meldahl was torpedoed by the German uboat U-181. Two machinists was killed when the torpedo struck. The survivors headed for shore and were spotted by a allied airplane. The plane dropped down provisions and water and on the 13th of November, they were rescued by a minesweeper and brought to Port Elizabeth.
