MT South Africa was on a journey from Curacao to Great Britain through Freetown carrying 13.000 ton of oil. The convoy was disbanded on the 6th of June South Africa was torpedoed on the 8th of June 1942 by the German uboat U-128 in the position 1240N, 4957W, circa 40 nautical miles east of Trinidad. The torpedo hit the machine room where five men were killed. In a span of two minutes, the boat broke in half and sunk. Two lifeboats set sail with 13 and 23 men respectively on board. The German U-boat surfaced and handed canned food and two bottles of rum over to one of the lifeboats. On the 16th of June one of the boats reached Trinidad while the other boat was on the 15th of June picked up by an American warship and brought them to the Port of Spain the day after. 5 people perished in the sinking.
