World War IIDS Hafthor
The DS Hafthor was stopped by the Japanese destroyer IJN Uranami on 7 December 1941 and taken into custody. The ship was en route from Singapore to Bangkok with general cargo. The crew was ordered into lifeboats. Two of the boats were later captured by the Japanese, and the captain, three officers, and 36 Chinese crew members were taken into Japanese captivity. The third lifeboat reached land on 10 December. Some of the seamen traveled by canoe and others on foot through the jungle to Saguara, and then made their way to Bangkok. There, 1st Officer Røsholdt died in May 1942 from illness caused by insect bites. Hafthor was renamed Niyo Maru by the Japanese and was sunk on 12 September 1942 by British aircraft west of Bassein.
