World War IBarque Carmel
Barque Carmel was attacked and fired upon on June 16, 1917, by a German U-boat in the North Sea. The ship was en route from Fredrikstad to West Hartlepool carrying a cargo of props in 1917. The vessel was found severely damaged and brought ashore and later condemned. The crew of nine people was missing and likely attempted to escape from the ship during the attack.
