World War IIDS Alida Gorthon
The Swedish merchant vessel DS Alida Gorthon was torpedoed on 29 August 1940 by the German U-boat U-100 northwest of Tory Island, Ireland. The ship was en route from Methil to St. John’s, Newfoundland, in ballast. Thirty-one lives were lost, and thirteen persons were rescued. One Norwegian later succumbed to his injuries.
