World War IIDS Askild
The SS Askild departed from St. John’s on 2 December 1942 bound for St. Lawrence in ballast. Strong gales and storms caused Askild to lose control. The vessel was unable to clear the land and ran aground, eventually being lost in the breakers near Chance Cove, close to Cape Race. Two lives were lost in the sinking.
